The 2024-2025 Paramedic Program application period is now closed.
The New Stony Brook Paramedic Program
Standing on a 30-year tradition of excellence in paramedic education, the Stony Brook Paramedic Program has now evolved. Our new program meets the challenges of a 21st-century paramedic. We acknowledge the future of paramedicine is the integration of paramedicine into the healthcare system as a versatile community healthcare resource. Modern-day EMS personnel will need to be clinicians rather than technicians. Stony Brook Paramedic students will receive education surpassing the State and NREMT requirements, including advanced topics such as; ventilator strategy, advanced intubation techniques, video laryngoscopes, and medication pumps, to name a few.
The Stony Brook Difference
Stony Brook University is a major academic research center, including Stony Brook Hospital, a level-one trauma center. These attributes afford our Stony Brook students access to amazing opportunities across the spectrum of healthcare education, including the School of Health Professions, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Social Welfare, School of Dental Medicine, Program in Public Health, and many others.
Team Approach
Healthcare teams that practice collaboratively enhance the delivery of person-centered care and improve patient and system outcomes. Teamwork is instilled in our paramedic students from day one. Our students will have opportunities to experience real-world interprofessional team dynamics while providing cutting-edge EMS critical care. We have adopted a student-centric approach to education and incorporated new and innovative methodologies for learning. The program minimizes the standard lecture format and integrates state-of-the-art educational methods to advance student learning.
The Adult Learner: Curriculum
Experiential learning engages students allowing them to connect better theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations. Our innovative student-centered curriculum leverages emerging technologies and scenario-based learning. Our program will utilize the simulation lab with advanced human patient simulators and standardized patients. Students will experience Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), which allow a student to practice and demonstrate clinical skills in standardized medical or trauma scenarios. Our program has a dedicated decommissioned ambulance to enhance the student learning experience. Stress inoculation training will be introduced as the student progresses through the program.
Course faculty are experienced paramedics, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied health providers with multidisciplinary experience.
Efficient New Program Format

The program will be hosted in the Stony Brook Health Science Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm to 9pm. The New Paramedic Program is a non-credit-bearing certificate program.
