Paramedic Program Admissions
Admission into the Paramedic Program requires that potential students submit an application. Candidates can see if the program is accepting applications by checking the Course Offerings page.
Admission Policy
Eligibility
The Paramedic Program will not discriminate in its admission policies on the basis of sex, race, national origin, religion, or sexual preference.
At a minimum, all candidates must;
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Meet the technical standard for paramedics
- Be certified in New York at an EMT-Basic or higher level
- Maintain a certification in New York at an EMT-Basic or higher level throughout the duration of the course
Application Process
Potential students wanting to apply to the Paramedic Program should expect to go through a multi-step application process. This process will require the successful candidate to;
- Complete an application through the Slate platform
- Submit two academic or professional reference forms
- Submit academic records such as;
- High school diploma or equivalent
- College, non-degree
- College degree (Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's)
- Transcripts and report cards
- Submit proof of honorable discharge, if applicable
- Submit proof of current EMT certification
- Applicants whose certification expires prior to the program's conclusion must be already enrolled in a refresher course or CME program. These candidates will be required to complete a learning contract stating their commitment to recertify as part of the application process
- Applicants who have completed the EMT program but have not received their certification results may be provisionally admitted to the program at the discretion of the program director, pending their certification prior to the course's start date
- Write and submit personal statement
- Sit for an interview Program Admissions Committee
- Complete an in-person, proctored pretest on the Platinum Planner platform (at a $5 cost to the student) and score passing grades on each section of the pretest;
- Score 65% or higher on the Mathematics section
- Score 70% or higher on the EMT-Basic section
- Score 8.0 or higher on the Flesch-Kincaid Grading Scale for a reading / writing assessment
- Students who fail on any section may attempt 1 retake of the exam
Minimum Expectations Goal
The Minimum Expectations goal statement for the Paramedic program is to prepare entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.
