Agnes McConlogue Ferro, PT, DPT Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist Phone: 631-638-2355 |
Agnes received her Master of Arts and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees from Touro College. Despite initial intentions of providing physical therapy for fellow dancers, she found her true passion was working with children. She was a physical therapist for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) for more than 10 years, working with children with a broad range of diagnoses and ages. Agnes completed a Leadership and Education for Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Fellowship at Westchester Institute for Human Development and earned a Pediatric Certification in Neurodevelopmental Treatment. In 2012. Agnes earned APTA Board Certification as a Pediatric Certified Specialist (PCS), recertified in 2022, and completed 2 terms on the APTA's Specialization Academy of Content Experts (SACE) for pediatrics. Agnes completed the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy’s Knowledge Broker Network (KBNet) training in 2018 and was selected to be part of the Pediatric Physical Therapy Education Summit in 2023.
In 1998, Agnes began a collaboration with National Dance Institute (NDI) by starting an inclusionary dance program in a NYC public school. Her relationship has continued with NDI as the Co-creator/Director of the DREAM Project (Dancers Realize Excellence through Arts and Movement): an inclusion-based movement program for all levels of abilities, focusing on collaboration and meaningful participation. Stony Brook University DPT students volunteer during the DREAM project’s week-long camp, currently offered annually in Harlem, NYC during February and August. Agnes continues to be honored to present findings from her research on the DREAM Project through conferences and presentations, including The Kennedy Center and the American Physical Therapy Association.
Agnes joined the PT program at New York Medical College in 1997 as a Clinical Faculty Associate serving as adjunct and lecturer in the pediatric coursework. After moving to Long Island in 2005, she served as an adjunct faculty member in the DPT Program at Stony Brook University and was honored to receive the Adjunct Faculty Honor Award in 2008. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor responsible for pediatric curriculum and is honored to be the current Director of the Center for Community Engagement for the School of Health Professions. Agnes is proud to have earned her PhD through the University at Buffalo’s Curriculum, Instruction and the Science of Learning Doctoral Program.
Agnes’ research and work with children and families from the disability community, and alongside an interprofessional committee of Stony Brook faculty and staff and members of the community, led to the creation of the Inclusion Done Right! Conference. The annual conference, launched in 2023, seeks to bridge the knowledge-to-action gap that exists in community-based programs for people with disabilities. It is an invitation to the community and university members to be part of the disability-inclusive movement for change.
Agnes’ current research interests include physical therapy goal-writing in the school setting and exploring perspectives of children with and without disabilities, and that of their parents/caregivers, involved in an inclusive dance program. Future research will include perspectives of the attendees of the Inclusion Done Right! Conference as we seek to identify and build the parameters of ‘Done Right!’ for inclusive community-based programs.
