Dr. Gostic received her Baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 1984. She went on to receive her Masters degree in Health Sciences with a focus in administration and education in 1991, and her post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Stony Brook University in 2005. She completed the Long Island Geriatric Education Center Associate Program in 2003 and received Board Certification as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2015. Cheri completed certification as a New York State Citizen Public Health Leader in March, 2021, through Cornell University, in collaboration with the New York State Department of Health.

Dr. Gostic teaches Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology I and II at both the Stony Brook and Southampton campuses. She was an Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education in the DPT program and served on the NY NJ Clinical Education Consortium from 2000-2010, and earned the APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor Training credential. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Gostic worked as a physical therapist for Stony Brook University Hospital for 14 years, as a Senior PT on the cardiopulmonary service and in the Outpatient Physical Therapy Department. She has extensive clinical experience in home care and worked per-diem in acute care settings after joining the faculty for over 20 years. Dr. Gostic was appointed Director of Communications for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in 2012.

Dr. Gostic’s scholarly interests are in the role of exercise and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, the current practice of physical therapists in the area of assessment and intervention of overweight and obesity, and in physical therapy clinical education.
