In 2003, Dr. Kyle Hewson joined the Stony Brook University DPT faculty after working as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education at New York Institute of Technology. She received a Bachelor of Science from Hunter College with a major in Physical Therapy, a Master of Science in Exercise Science from Queens College and a Doctorate of Education with an emphasis in Health Care Education from Nova Southeastern University. Her dissertation was entitled: "A Study to Determine the Ethical Preparedness of Physical Therapists Practicing in the State of New York."
From 2004 until its completion in 2016, Dr. Hewson was the Director of the Post-Professional DPT program. She was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2012. In July 2013, Dr. Hewson was appointed the Program Director at the Southampton Campus for the newly expanded Entry-Level Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program. In July 2015, she was promoted to Vice Chairperson of the DPT Program and, in 2020, was appointed Chairperson. In 2023, Dr. Hewson resumed the position of Vice Chair of the program.
She has varied clinical experience in the provision of physical therapy services in the outpatient, rehabilitation, acute care and skilled nursing settings. Dr. Hewson has held a variety of administrative and leadership positions in both the clinical and academic settings. She has presented at various national conferences on ethics, community based service, and clinical education in physical therapy.
Dr. Hewson embraced the mission of service as demonstrated by her involvement from 2007 to 2013 in PAR FORE (www.parfore.org), an intergenerational mentoring program that utilized golf and life skills for middle school adolescents from underrepresented areas of Suffolk County. She has also encouraged the entry-level DPT students to participate in various service opportunities in their first and second years of the curriculum. In the DPT Program, she teaches Professional Practice I: Foundations in year one, Psychosocial Aspects of Disability in year two, and Ethics and Health Care for Physical Therapists in year three.
