Dr. Cherney has been the Stony Brook University Head Team Physician since 1983. A graduate of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, and Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. Dr. Cherney is a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine - Department of Orthopaedics. In addition, Dr. Cherney is the Medical Director and Clinical Professor for the School of Health Professions - Athletic Training Program.
One of the first sports medicine specialists on Long Island, Dr. Cherney has been a dedicated team physician for Stony Brook athletics for over 35 years, providing the University with excellent medical care. Dr. Cherney spearheaded the Sports Medicine Program and has been an advocate for the importance of athletic trainers and automated external defibrillators on the sidelines of sporting events. Dr. Cherney’s expertise in the field of sports medicine is a great asset to the University as well as to numerous other athletes on Long Island.
In 2019, the Stony Brook University Department of Athletics inducted Dr Stuart Cherney into the Rita and Kurt Eppenstein Athletics Hall of Fame for his many contributions and dedication to supporting the well-being of student-athletes, concentrating on the prevention of sports-related injuries as well as presenting ways to make athletics facilities safer for all participants.
