Xristos Gaglias was hired in July 2001 to serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Curriculum Director where he was responsible for all phases of curriculum development and management. In March 2024, Gaglias was appointed Chair after serving for 11 years as Vice Chair of the Athletic Training Program. Gaglias began at the University as a consultant during the spring of 2000 to analyze Stony Brook University’s potential for an Athletic Training Program. In April 2018, Gaglias received his PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University in Arizona. He is a graduate of Cortland State with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training and Western Michigan University with a master’s degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. Gaglias spent his first three years at Island Sports Physical Therapy as the Director of Athletic Training Services. He then went on to South Dakota State University for three years as a faculty member and Clinical Instructor/Coordinator of Rehabilitation. While in South Dakota, he also served on the State Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners. Prior to coming to SBU, he was the Clinical Coordinator for Northeastern University Athletic Training Program.

Gaglias has been a BOC certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association since 1985. He is also a member of the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association and a CPR/AED/First Aid instructor for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Emergency Care and Safety Institute. His research interest includes state licensure and regulation issues for the health care professionals’ scope of practice.
