Lisa Komnik joins SHP as Clinical Assistant Professor of Athletic Training.  Prof. Komnik comes to Stony Brook University after a substantial tenure as the Head Athletic Trainer at St. Joseph’s University – Long Island. She began there in the Fall of 1996 after completing her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Biology and master’s degree in Biomechanics at the University of Delaware.  While pursuing her master’s degree, she served as the sole athletic trainer at Caravel Academy in Bear, DE.  Caravel Academy sponsored 32 athletic teams for its middle school through varsity programs and she worked with the NCAA’s National Youth Sports Program.

Upon arriving at St. Joseph’s University Prof. Komnik designed the Danzi Athletic Center’s Athletic Training Facility and oversaw the 12 intercollegiate athletic programs.  In 2000, Prof. Komnik moved on to the College of Charleston in SC, but returned to SJU in 2003.  During her tenure, she was a part of the tremendous growth of the Athletic Department.  It grew to include 20 intercollegiate teams and over 300 student-athletes; it changed from the Hudson Valley to Skyline Conference, where more than 15 teams have captured their conference Championship and competed in their respective NCAA tournaments; and it has added the beautiful Outdoor Field Complex.  The Sports Medicine Department itself has also expanded to include three additional athletic trainers, who provide annual Athletic Physicals, injury and illness evaluation, rehabilitation, practice and competition coverage for the student-athletes, and is a clinical site for Stony Brook University’s Athletic Training Program.  All of the SJU staff are preceptors for that program and serve as mentors and clinical instructors for students studying to become athletic trainers.

Prof. Komnik has served as an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University, teaching several courses in the Athletic Training Program, including the Principles of Physical Agents course in the master’s degree program.  She is BOC - certified athletic trainer and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association, New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association, College Athletic Trainers’ Society, and the Suffolk County Athletic Trainers’ Association. Her primary team responsibilities at SJU were men's soccer, women's swimming, and baseball.
