Afrinash Ahamad is a board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) and Specialist in Medical Microbiology (SM) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). She earned dual bachelor’s degree in Bioscience and Clinical Laboratory Science from SUNY Farmingdale, followed by a master’s degree in Neuroscience and a PhD in Neuroscience and Behavior from Stony Brook University.
Dr. Ahamad has extensive expertise in clinical microbiology, laboratory diagnostics, and clinical education. She joined Stony Brook University’s department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences in 2017 and currently serves as a Clinical Associate Professor, teaching Medical and Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, and Mycology. She also serves as Director of Clinical Education for the CLS program, overseeing clinical education and training across multiple laboratory disciplines, including Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, Immunology/Serology, Histology, Coagulation, and Hematology.
In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Ahamad conducts research at the intersection of aging, metabolism, and age-associated neurodegenerative diseases. Her doctoral dissertation investigated lipid metabolism in the brain across healthy aging and neurological disease models. Her research interests focus on defining the metabolic mechanisms that shape brain aging and contribute to the development and progression of neurodegenerative disease.
Dr. Ahamad is actively engaged in professional and university service, serving on the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Microbiology Examination Committee as well as several university committees focused on research, clinical education, and interprofessional education.
