Dr. Dale Coffin, Ed.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, joined the Occupational Therapy Program at Stony Brook University in 2021 as Associate Professor and Department Chairperson. An occupational therapist since 1993, she completed her undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University and earned her Master of Science degree and Certificate of Advanced Professional Studies in Occupational Therapy from Springfield College. She received her Doctorate in Higher Education and Leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2019. Dr. Coffin’s areas of specialty include Pediatrics (Early Intervention and Preschool) and Sensory Integration.
Dr. Coffin began her career in higher education in 2012, serving in roles including Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Program Director, and Department Chairperson. She has participated in and published research related to service learning, virtual gaming interventions with preschool populations, and therapeutic programming within Head Start settings. She has presented nationally at conferences hosted by the American Occupational Therapy Association and has conducted numerous continuing education seminars for occupational therapy practitioners.
In 2014, Dr. Coffin established international service-learning initiatives in Belize in collaboration with The Inspiration Center. Through these efforts, hundreds of children receive access to therapy services, adaptive equipment, caregiver education, and individualized plans of care each year. She continues this work at Stony Brook with service trips to Morocco and Guatemala.
As Department Chairperson, Dr. Coffin is committed to embedding service, scholarship, leadership, and mentorship throughout the occupational therapy curriculum at Stony Brook University to prepare empathetic, compassionate, and evidence-based practitioners who will advance the profession and serve diverse communities.
