Doctorate in Physical Therapy: Admission Requirements

PLEASE NOTE: The Stony Brook University Physical Therapy Program will accept grades of pass/fail for courses completed in 2020 spring and summer semesters, including prerequisite coursework

ACADEMIC PREREQUISITES:

All applicants must meet the following requirements for admission:

  • Baccalaureate degree (no preferred major required)
  • Achieved a minimum grade of  "C" in all prerequisite courses below: 
  • Natural Sciences: The following courses must be designated for science majors and include laboratory segments (except where noted) and have been completed within the last ten years:
    • Biology I & II (2 courses, labs required)
    • Chemistry I & II (2 courses, labs required)
    • Physics I & II (2 courses, labs required)
    • Physiology  - select one of the following options:
      • One course in Anatomy and one course in Physiology (any type, lab not required)
        OR
      • Two courses of Anatomy & Physiology (lab required, does not have to be designated for science majors)
  • One course in Psychology
  • One course in Statistics

PREFERENCE is given to applicants with:

  • A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
  • No more than two outstanding science prerequisite courses at the time of application; outstanding sciences cannot be in the same subject area.

HEALTH RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • A total of 100 hours of volunteer or work experience with a physical therapist. At least 50 volunteer or work experience hours must be documented and submitted through PTCAS at the time of application. The PTCAS application file can be updated with the remaining hours prior to the close of the relevant admissions cycle.

OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Three references; it is required that at least one of these references be from a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • Official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)report is required if English is not your first language. A minimum score of 90 is required.
  • Beginning with the 2024 admissions cycle, the Stony Brook DPT Program is NO LONGER requiring the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admissions.
