Professor Thailer received his first Bachelor of Science in Biology from the State University of New York at Albany. During his undergraduate education, he also worked as an Emergency Medical Technician. He was a founding member of the Five Quad Volunteer Ambulance Service, the student-run emergency medical response unit at SUNY Albany. He also gained valuable emergency care experience working for the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation EMS System as an EMT in Jamaica Queens.

He graduated from the Stony Brook PA Program in 1980. His interest in Emergency Medicine soon led him to join the staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, New York. He was later promoted to supervising PA in Emergency Medicine, where he served until 2004. During his tenure at QHC, he was an active preceptor and educator of PA students, Paramedics, and Nurses. 

Professor Thailer joined the faculty of the Stony Brook PA program in 2005 and concurrently completed the Stony Brook PA Post-Professional Masters Program, where he earned his MS degree in Physician Assistant Studies.

As a full-time faculty member in the PA Program, Professor Thailer’s responsibilities include teaching and coordinating several units in the pre-clinical program. He also coordinates the clinical year Emergency Medicine clerkship and is the course coordinator for the program’s Master's Project sequence.
