Mission
To provide high-quality graduate-level medical education in an interprofessional environment that fosters critical thinking and life-long learning. We seek to develop in our students the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to be outstanding, compassionate health care providers. We promote professionalism, leadership, service, and an appreciation of ethical values and diversity. Physician assistant education at Stony Brook emphasizes comprehensive patient-centered medical care across the lifespan and our curriculum focuses on the principles of evidence-based practice and the importance of scholarly activity.
Strategic Priority I - Program Education Delivery
Goal I.1 – Growth | Grow by improving access, quality-reputation, and best-in-class education
Objective 1 - Advance outstanding national quality rankings
- Tactic - The PA program will continue to rank highly in national and regional higher education surveys by providing high-quality education that receives favorable peer assessment of academic quality, as well as location, environment, strength of field, cost after tuition and financial aid, and job placement
- Tactic - The PA program will uphold the highest educational standards of its programs to ensure continued accreditation with national accrediting agencies
Goal I.2 - Student-centric | Streamline processes to increase student engagement
Objective 1 - Recruit, support and graduate diverse well-qualified students.
- Tactic - The PA program admissions criteria will reflect overall and academic science preparation across multiple areas including biology, chemistry and physics to recruit more academically prepared students
- Tactic - The PA program will decrease attrition rate to fall lower than the national average and standards of ARC-PA
- Tactic - The PA program will assign each PA student a faculty advisor and a student mentor to provide support and guidance throughout the two years of the program.
- Tactic - The PA program will ensure that students feel that their faculty advisors were helpful and supportive through student surveys administered during the pre-clinical year and after graduation
Objective 2 – Enhance Stony Brook University West Campus program pipeline
- Tactic - Support the Pre-PA club, mentoring activities, and participate in SHP pipeline recruitment events on- and off-campus
Goal I.3 - Novel Education | Foster education and training experience
Objective 1 - Provide a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with evidence-based knowledge and skills necessary for clinical practice
- Tactic - The PA program curriculum ensures that students have mastered the foundation knowledge necessary to provide care to their future patients.
- Tactic - The PA program will ensure that students are prepared to critically evaluate and analyze scientific and medical journals and learn to apply this research in clinical practice.
- Tactic - The PA program will meet or exceed the PANCE exam thresholds as established by industry standards and ARC-PA
- Tactic - The PA program will survey recent graduates regarding their preparation to enter clinical practice to help assess program success
Objective 2 - Develop communication and collaboration skills necessary to work effectively in health care teams
- Tactic - The PA program will offer opportunities for students to work on interprofessional healthcare teams
- Tactic - The PA program will offer students opportunities to enhance their communication and collaboration skills

Objective 1 - Encourage and support engagement in professional development
- Tactic - The PA program will encourage student members of professional agencies to participate at the state and national committee level to build leadership skills and networking opportunities
- Tactic - The PA program will support conference attendance and professional lobbying activities
- Tactic - The PA program will support faculty and staff service on local, state and national professional committees

Goal V.1 - Expansion of Partnerships | Expand and advance internal and external partnerships to strengthen community connections and affiliate relationships
Objective 1 - Empower students to participate in the delivery of medical care to diverse and underserved populations
- Tactic - The PA program will afford students clinical experiences in facilities designated as health professional shortage areas, serving diverse patient populations
- Tactic - The PA program will explore the opportunity for students to participate in international medical missions to underserved areas
- Tactic - Support DEI initiatives in the program and opportunities for students to engage in DEI-related events/opportunities, i.e., Diversity Day, microaggressions workshops, etc.
Objective 2 - Provide opportunities for student involvement in community service, especially with underserved populations
- Tactic - The PA program will provide opportunities for community-based service-learning activities, most in underserved communities
