Commencement (Main/West Campus) Information
University Commencement Graduation Information Check-Off List:
- All undergraduate and graduate students should have applied for graduation through the SOLAR SYSTEM. If you are unsure if you have applied for graduation, please contact your program.
- Stony Brook will celebrate their 55th Commencement Ceremony on May 20, 2016. The main ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. At this major campus event, graduates from all departments will be recognized, honorary degrees conferred, and university honors and awards presented.
- All University faculty and students who graduated in December 2015, or plan to graduate in May/June/July or August 2016 (this includes SHTM students), are invited to attend. There is a formal academic procession for this ceremony. Graduates march behind their own school or department banner. You will line up at Post #11 by 10:00 a.m. behind the School of Health Technology and Management banner.
- The Baccalaureate Honors Convocation recognizes candidates graduating with distinctions of cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude. This convocation will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2016 in the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. This event is by invitation only. Invitations will be mailed to candidates graduating with distinction of cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude.
LIVE WEB CAST
There will be a live webcast of the commencement and it will be available from the Stony Brook University homepage. The ceremony will then be archived and available online for two weeks following the ceremony. Due to limited seating, an alternate viewing location has been secured in Frey Hall for all non-ticketed guests.
MAIN CEREMONY TICKET INFORMATION
Gates to the Stadium open at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are required. In order to obtain tickets, candidates must complete the Ceremony Attendance Form on the SOLAR System. The deadline for completing this form on the SOLAR System is midnight May 1, 2016. Tickets guarantee entrance to the Stadium, but specific seats cannot be reserved.
Ticket Distribution for the Main Ceremony:
Each candidate who completes the ceremony attendance form on the SOLAR System is eligible for three (3) guest tickets for open seating. Registered candidates must pick up their tickets for the Main Ceremony from May 1 through May 15 (current identification requested).

Unclaimed Tickets:
Unclaimed tickets will be distributed at a time and place to be determined (check Commencement website often for updated information).
ACADEMIC ROBES (CAPS, GOWNS AND HOODS)
All candidates planning to march in the Commencement or Convocation procession must be robed. This year's undergraduate graduates will be wearing red academic attire. Retainable caps, gowns and hoods for bachelors’ and masters’ candidates can be purchased at the University and HSC Bookstores starting in late March. Graduate students will be given a link from your department to rent their royal blue regalia. Robes and hoods are designed specifically for each degree level. The satin lining is designed in the colors (blue and gold) representing the State University of New York. The color of the velvet border is degree specific: Bachelor of Science is yellow/goldenrod, Master of Science is yellow/goldenrod (longer in length than bachelor), PhD is philosophy (royal) blue.
Cost for Academic regalia – to be determined
Undergraduate regalia is available at either bookstore. Graduate regalia is ordered directly from the supplier.

If you are unable to get to either bookstore to purchase your academic attire, it can be ordered and shipped to you for an additional charge. In order to do this, your order must be placed by April 30, 2016 to assure that you will have it on time.

Convocation (East/HSC Campus) Information
- The convocation for the School of Health Technology and Management is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 at the Stony Brook University Staller Center. The ceremony should last no longer than 2 hours. Graduates need to check in and line up at the Staller Center Lobby no later than 10:00a.m.
- All candidates planning to march in the June 24th convocation procession must be robed.
- All graduates will be recognized individually, and the recipient of the 2015 McTernan Honor Award is scheduled to present the annual alumni address.
- SHTM and program awards will be presented and students who have completed all requirements will be individually recognized and receive professional certificates.
- All graduates are encouraged to attend.
- Each student will receive three (3) tickets to the SHTM Convocation. If additional tickets are available, they will be distributed by your department after June 10, 2016.
- Tickets for the June 24th SHTM Convocation Ceremony will be distributed to their respective programs between June 1st and June 9th.
- It is to be determined if departmental ceremonies will be webcast. Please visit the commencement website often to check for updates.
- Long Island Photography will be taking photographs of all graduates during the ceremony. They will email/mail you proofs. No purchase is necessary. It is a service provided by the School of Health Technology & Management.

Day of Graduation:
1. Check in at the Staller Center Lobby no later than 10:00 a.m.
2. All backpacks, bags, and other items must be left with someone in your party.
3. There will be someone to assist you with putting on your academic regalia while you are waiting to line up.
4. Class pictures will be taken after the ceremony. Please let your family know that you will meet them afterwards.
