As of 2018, ASAHP’s membership consists of 122 academic institutions, 3 professional associations, and 6 affiliate members.

Healthcare Jobs Rank High with US News & World Report

US News & World Report ranks healthcare jobs among some of the top 100 best jobs! To identify professions for the 2022 rankings, USN started with jobs that have the largest projected number and percentage of openings from 2020 to 2030, as determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The jobs that topped the list were then selected for the 2022 Best Jobs analysis and rankings. Some of our programs ranking high on the list: #3 Physician Assistant; #10 Speech-Language Pathologist; #16 Respiratory Therapist; #28 Physical Therapist; #31 Occupational Therapist. In addition, our programs rank high on the USN Best Healthcare Jobs list and the USN Best Healthcare Support Jobs. Check out the links to learn more!

Lisa Muratori, PT, EdD, to participate on next Stony Brook University Tiger Team

During the past academic year, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Office of the Provost launched a Tiger Team initiative focused on areas of interest for NSF, DOE and DOD. The goal of this initiative was to prepare our research community to aggressively respond to increased federal funding opportunities by submitting competitive proposals when these new funding opportunities arise.

They are now launching the second group of Tiger Teams, focused on life and health sciences, and have asked Dr. Muratori, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, and Director of Research for the School of Health Professions, to participate in a Biomedical Team on Brain, Behavior, Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Disorders.   As one of 6-10 Team members, she will help identify the strengths (and weaknesses) across the University, with a focus on identifying and connecting faculty who could form collaborative teams that can plan for coordinated responses to funding opportunities. This will also require some thought about the types and specific topics that are likely to be the focus of new funding initiatives from sponsors such as NIH. Each Tiger Team will have administrative support from the Office of Proposal Development to assist in the coordination of this effort.

We are now the Stony Brook School of Health Professions!

The Stony Brook School of Health Technology and Management is now the Stony Brook School of Health Professions!  As the School continues to move forward and create more visibility for ourselves, it's important to have a name that better reflects our programs, mission, vision, and goals, as well as the offerings and opportunities available to students who are seeking programs to study health professions.

Health professionals are those who use scientific principles and evidence-based practice for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic diseases; promote disease prevention and wellness for optimum health, and apply administration and management skills to support health care systems in a variety of settings.  Health professionals are concerned with the identification, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment of acute and chronic diseases and disorders; provision of dietary and nutrition services; rehabilitation services; and the management and operation of health systems. Health professionals apply scientific principles and evidence-based practice in order to optimize patient or client outcomes. Health professionals must also attend to the prevention of disease and the management of patients with chronic disease. Thus, the scope of health practice extends to the individual, the family, the community and to public education; many allied health professions specialize in the promotion of optimum function and health and the improvement of health-related quality of life. In addition, healthcare administration and health systems management are important components of allied health.

Professions that are often included in a School of Health Professions include many of the well-known non-nurse, non-physician healthcare providers including audiologists and speech language pathologists; physical therapists, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists; diagnostic medical personnel (medical laboratory scientists, cytogenetic technologists, diagnostic molecular scientists, histotechnologists, and pathologists’ assistants); imaging specialists (radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and sonographers); nutritionists and dietitians; and physician assistants. Others often include emergency medical personnel (EMTs, paramedics); exercise science professionals (athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, kinesiotherapists); health information technologists; health educators (asthma educators, diabetes educators); counselors (genetic counselors, mental health counselors, family therapists); specialists in cancer diagnosis and treatment (medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists); pharmacy personnel (pharmacy technicians and assistants) and other healthcare providers and support personnel, such as medical assistants.  The professions included vary from country to country; however, estimates have suggested that as much as 60% of the U.S. healthcare workforce may be classified as health professionals, not including medicine, nursing or dentistry.  Health professionals play an essential role in the delivery of healthcare and related services in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Our School currently provides the highest quality education and takes the lead in creating superior healthcare education programs that respond to the region’s and country’s current and emerging public health challenges, preparing competent health professionals and leaders for practice across multiple healthcare settings and institutions.  Our educational mission supports an interprofessional learning environment that fosters scholarly activity, including basic, translational and educational research, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, leadership, and professionalism, while affirming the importance of ethical behavior, human diversity, equity and inclusion, cutting-edge technology, and a team approach to health care.  Over the last 2 years, during a global pandemic, the mission of the School has become even more relevant as our students, faculty and staff have been called upon to fill the needs of the growing workforce required to manage COVID-19 as well as the aftermath that we expect in a post COVID world.

The School offers programs that are based at Stony Brook, Southampton or both campuses. Athletic Training (MS), Clinical Laboratory Sciences (BS), EMT-Paramedic (Certificate), Health Science (BS), Medical Molecular Biology (Advanced Certificate; MS), and Respiratory Care (BS) classes are offered on the Stony Brook campus.  Applied Health Informatics (MS) and Speech-Language Pathology (MS) classes are offered on the Southampton campus. The School has cohorts at both campuses for its Occupational Therapy (MS), Physical Therapy (DPT), and Physician Assistant Education (MS) programs.  The School is home to two centers: the Center for Community Engagement and Leadership Development (CCE) and the Center for Public Health Education (CPHE). Both of these centers offer education, training and outreach to our community.
