"Equality is leaving the door open for anyone who has the means to approach it. Equity is ensuring that there is a pathway to the door for those who need it." -Caroline Belden
Welcome to the Stony Brook School of Health Profession’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). It is an honor and privilege for me to serve as the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The mission of the office is to create a culture of inclusion and social justice within the school, by recognizing its diversity and addressing mechanisms of systemic bias that affect marginalized groups. The DEIB office works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders to promote a broadened celebration of difference within our community. Each one of our school members bring their welcomed differences and uniqueness to learning spaces on a daily basis. These celebrated differences contribute to shaping our school’s reactions and perspectives regarding today’s social and health care issues. The better we understand and appreciate individual perspectives of a diversified workforce, our school will position itself more advantageously to better prepare future clinicians to provide equitable health care.
Our overall goals are to:
- Develop and facilitate diversity related educational sessions for stakeholders
- Provide resources to support faculty's ability to align course content with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging best pedagogical practices;
- Provide resources to support programs’ ability to meet diversity accreditation requirements;
- Seek campus and external funding opportunities that support the development and sustainability of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices;
- Create and implement mentorship programs to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across the school.
