Meet Professor Afrinash Ahamad: Expert in Microbiology & STI Awareness

Are you considering a career in the fascinating field of clinical laboratory science? Meet Afrinash Ahamad, a dynamic Clinical Associate Professor and the Director of Clinical Education within our program.

Professor Ahamad brings a wealth of real-world expertise to Stony Brook University. As a board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) and a specialist in Medical Microbiology (SM), she deeply understands the laboratory science behind diagnosing diseases. Her academic journey includes a Master's degree in Neuroscience from Stony Brook, and she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in the same field, demonstrating her commitment to lifelong learning and cutting-edge scientific inquiry.

Before joining our faculty in 2017, Professor Ahamad gained extensive hands-on experience in hospital clinical microbiology departments. This practical background directly informs her engaging teaching style in courses covering crucial areas like Medical and Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Mycology, and Parasitology – the foundations for understanding infectious diseases.

"In the lab, I apply my knowledge and curiosity, stepping into the role of a detective on a mission to uncover the hidden truth.  Each diagnostic test is a clue, bringing me closer to solving the puzzle of infectious agents. With every test and observation, I solve the mysteries of pathogens, using clinical skills and analytical thinking to pinpoint the cause of infection, ultimately guiding the diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s clinical symptoms."

Understanding Today's Health Challenges: The Importance of STI Awareness

As we observe STI Awareness Week, it's essential to recognize the role of laboratory science in addressing this public health concern. Professor Ahamad has actively made an impactful contribution to this particular area.  She presented   "Sex a Commodity: Rise in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Youth" at a recent professional seminar. Additionally, Professor Ahamad led a study-driven study on the role of diagnostics in STI prevention and management. She presented this research project involving CLS hybrid students at the 19th Annual Stony Brook Medicine Women in Medicine (WiM) Research Day, 2025, and School of Health Professions Research Day, 2025. These efforts highlight her dedication to addressing current health challenges and preparing future professionals to tackle pressing public health issues like STIs.

Professor Ahamad's expertise is particularly relevant for prospective students interested in the diagnostic aspects of healthcare. She not only teaches the theoretical underpinnings of identifying infectious agents, including those responsible for STIs, but also oversees the clinical education of our students, bridging theory with practical application. This ensures that future medical laboratory scientists are well-prepared to perform the vital testing that informs patient care and public health initiatives.

Beyond the Microscope: A Passion for Discovery

While her expertise in microbiology is impressive, her curiosity and dedication extend beyond the infectious world.  Her ongoing Ph.D. research focuses on metabolism during aging and the connection of metabolism to diseases like epilepsy and age-associated neurodegenerative diseases, showcasing the interconnectedness of biological systems. She actively contributes to the scientific community; Prof. Ahamad serves on the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)- Microbiology  Examination committee and is involved with Microbiology (ASM). Previously, she served in the American Society of Clinical Laboratory (ASCLS) NY chapter, earning state-level recognition for her contributions to the field. Her leadership roles and contributions to these organizations ensure she remains at the forefront of scientific advancements.

Professor Ahamad has made an impactful contribution to infectious disease through her publications. These include case studies on challenging infections like a rare bloodstream infection and a misdiagnosed case of Lyme disease, demonstrating her analytical skills and ability to contribute to the scientific and medical community.

Professor Ahamad is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of clinical laboratory scientists. If you're a prospective student eager to learn from experienced professionals and explore the vital role of laboratory science in healthcare, including the crucial area of infectious disease diagnostics, we encourage you to visit our website, learn more about the program, and connect with our faculty. We would love to answer your questions and help you start your journey.
