The Center's mission is to provide relevant and critical information on HIV/AIDS that will: support health and human service professionals caring for people living with HIV/AIDS; promote quality care and target resources needed to meet the needs of underserved communities; promote HIV prevention education and harm reduction; influence public policy and facilitate research relevant to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The Center for Public Health Education (CPHE) is a Local Performance Site (LPS) of the Northeast/Caribbean AIDS Education & Training Center Program located at Stony Brook University. This grant’s mission is to provide training opportunities and clinical consultations to health care clinicians working with people living with HIV in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties. This program is able to provide a whole host of specialized trainings. CPHE is a HIV/STI/Hepatitis C Regional Training Center for the Long Island and New York City region for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute. The Center provides a diverse menu of more than 25 curricula on various topics and how they affect and/or are related to HIV/AIDS. Some examples are: Building Bridges to Cultural Competency, Introduction to HIV, STIs and Viral Hepatitis, mental health services and HIV testing courses. The Center is currently celebrating over 25 years of excellence in education. During this time our skilled and diverse educators and consultants have provided critical trainings to more than 30,000 health and human services providers including Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Oral Health Professionals, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Mental Health/Substance Use Professionals and Case Managers.

  • The CPHE is a division within the School of Health Technology and Management. The Center maintains strong links with the Adult and Pediatric HIV/AIDS Treatment Centers at University Medical Center at Stony Brook. These Medical Directors function as consultants to the Center and are available for trainings, preceptorships and clinical consultations.
  • The CPHE is responsible for providing HIV education to providers in Nassau, Suffolk and New York City.

NEW YORK STATE PEER WORKER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The Center for Public Health Education at Stony Brook University helps administer the New York State Peer Worker Certification Program offered through the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute. More than 200 people living with HIV, Hepatitis C or those who have accessed Harm Reduction services have become certified peer workers since the program's inception in 2016, and an additional 500 are enrolled in the program. Our Center's staff administers required core training classes, helps peers navigate the application process, leads quarterly Peer Worker Review Board meetings in New York City, and helps coordinate the program's annual graduation ceremony. 


FREE CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

As a Regional Training Center and a Northeast/Caribbean AIDS Education & Training Center, many CPHE training courses are accepted towards meeting the training hours for CMEs and CEUs and for Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) for credentialing. These educational credits are free of charge. Partnership for Health: A Brief Safer Sex Intervention in Clinics Serving HIV+ Patients

The Partnership for Health intervention facilitates the delivery of prevention messages to people living with HIV as part of every clinic visit. The training to prepare a clinic to implement the Partnership for Health intervention is delivered on-site at your clinic.
