SHP appoints Dr. James Pierre-Glaude as New Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

We are thrilled to announce that as of February 2024, Dr. James Pierre-Glaude serves as our new Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. In his previous position as Director of DEI, appointed in September 2022, he brought a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to our school. In this critical assistant dean role, Dr. Pierre-Glaude works closely with faculty, staff, and students to advance our commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all community members. He will further lead initiatives to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diversity in all its forms while also implementing strategies to ensure equity and inclusion are woven into the fabric of our school. He has brought a unique perspective, fresh ideas, and a collaborative spirit that will undoubtedly enrich our community and propel us forward in our diversity and inclusion efforts.

Dr. James Pierre-Glaude is a renowned advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonnging (DEIB) in healthcare, with a distinguished career dedicated to fostering inclusive environments within educational and clinical settings.

As the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, he has played a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that promote equity and belonging for all students, faculty, and staff. His leadership in DEIB is informed by his extensive background in healthcare education and his commitment to addressing the systemic barriers that impact underrepresented groups.

Dr. Pierre-Glaude’s journey as a DEIB leader began with his own educational experiences at Stony Brook University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees. He completed his educational doctorate (EdD) at the University of Buffalo with a research focus on cultural competency training in healthcare education. His research is driven by the belief that culturally competent healthcare providers are essential to reducing health disparities in health care and improving patient outcomes in diverse populations.

In his role at Stony Brook University, Dr. Pierre-Glaude has led numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing the cultural competency of healthcare professionals. As a co-chair of the American Physical Therapy Association – NY Chapter’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, he has been instrumental in developing effective programs that support the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in healthcare professions. His work in this area has earned him several accolades, including the Stony Brook University Presidential Mini-Grant Award.

Dr. Pierre-Glaude is also a sought-after speaker and educator on DEIB topics. He has delivered presentations at national conferences on subjects such as cultural competence in healthcare education, inclusivity in treating athletes with disabilities, and the impact of healthcare providers’ training on patient health outcomes. His expertise in these areas has made him a respected voice in the ongoing conversation about equity in healthcare.

Beyond his academic and clinical responsibilities, he is actively involved in community service, particularly in initiatives that support marginalized communities. He is a board member of the American Amputee Soccer Association and a member of the Haitian American Caucus, where he chairs the Health Committee. His work with these organizations underscores his commitment to using his expertise to benefit those who are often overlooked or treated unfairly in traditional healthcare settings. Dr. Pierre- Glaude’s dedication to DEIB is not limited to his professional work. It is a core value that informs all aspects of his life. He is passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels valued and respected, and he continuously strives to serve as a catalyst for positive change and inclusion in the healthcare community and beyond.
