Program Requirements

1) Students must complete a minimum of 18 credits (all of which must be completed at Stony Brook University)

2) 12 of the 18 credits must be fulfilled by the following required core courses:

•    HAS 530 Health Care Operations;
•    HAS 534 Fundamentals of Health Care Management;
•    HAS 538 Health Economics and Public Policy; and
•    HAS 545 Ethics and Health Care

The remaining six credits are to be electives of the students’ choosing.

3) Up to six (6) credits may be taken which do not begin with the HAS program code.  You must get approval from program directors or program administrators before enrolling in any course that does not have the HAS program code.  ALL courses MUST BE approved prior to registering.

4) Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 overall cumulative grade point average, with a minimum grade of "C" in any completed course

Special Academic Requirements

i) Students in the Advanced Certificate may not transfer coursework.  All courses must be taken through Stony Brook University’s School of Health Technology and Management, Stony Brook University’s College of Business, or based on program director approval. 

ii) Students must take at least one course during the term in which they matriculate (Spring, or Fall).

iii) Students must register for at least one credit every Fall and Spring semester to maintain University matriculation.  If for any reason students cannot take a course during the Fall and/or Spring semesters, they must request a leave of absence.

iv) To be eligible for the Advanced Certificate, a student must maintain matriculation for the academic periods prior to and including the period in which the certificate is awarded. 

v) Students must be matriculated in the Advanced Certificate program for two terms in order to receive the Advanced Certificate. 

Students must complete certificate requirements within a three-year time limit.  (Under unusual circumstances, a student may petition the program director for an extension.)
