SBU and ORCID Association

Stony Brook University is excited to announce the upcoming launch of a new Research Information Management System (RIMS). This public portal is designed to enhance your reputation as a researcher and showcase the groundbreaking research and diverse expertise of our exceptional faculty. This innovative, searchable database will allow scholars, journalists, policymakers, potential collaborators, and the public to easily discover Stony Brook researchers, explore their academic activities, and visualize connections across various fields. This initiative will elevate the visibility of our world-class research on this global portal.
What to Do Now? Affiliate your ORCID iD with SBU
In order to ensure the success and comprehensiveness of the new portal, it is essential for you to affiliate your ORCID iD with SBU. This will ensure the success and comprehensiveness of the new portal. Create or Update Your Stony Brook ORCID Record (See detailed instructions below).
What is ORCID?
ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, is a global, not-for-profit organization that issues researcher-owned digital persistent identifiers that are accepted by the major federal funding agencies. In addition, researcher-owned IDs like ORCID iDs enable you to connect your name(s) reliably, unambiguously, and permanently with your work throughout your research career, including publications, grants, education, employment, and other biographical information.
How do you link your ORCID iD with SBU?
Use this link to create your ORCID iD, or to login to your ORCID record if you have one already, to grant Stony Brook University (SBU) permission to update your ORCID record. When you click on this link you’ll be redirected to ORCID. After creating your account or logging in to your existing account, click “authorize access” to allow SBU to add information to your record.
What does linking your ORCID iD with SBU do?
Once your ORCID iD is affiliated with SBU, an entry will be added to your ORCID record noting your affiliation with SBU, and SBU will receive your ORCID iD for our records. Please note: it may take up to 5 minutes for your record to be updated.
Why should I allow SBU to update my ORCID record?
By updating your SBU ORCID record, you are optimizing your profile on the new RIMS. Having a complete profile enhances your visibility to potential collaborators, journalists, and funding agencies, making it easier for them to discover your groundbreaking work and expertise. A comprehensive profile ensures that your research contributions are accurately represented and easily accessible, amplifying the reach and impact of your academic activities.
When data in your ORCID record has been added by an organization you trust, you can be assured that it can be reused with a high degree of confidence in a number of different workflows–for example, when automatically filling out a growing number of manuscript submission or grant application forms.
What else should I know?
  • Although SBU will only add affiliation information to your ORCID record at this time, the permission you grant us now will allow us to add other information to your ORCID record (such as publications or grants awarded) in the future. We will notify you if we plan to do this.
  • Researcher control is central to everything ORCID does. If you no longer want SBU to edit your ORCID record, you can revoke permission at any time. See Revoking Permission for instructions.
  • Affiliation information added to your ORCID record is subject to ORCID’s Privacy Policy. Per this policy, you can control the visibility of this information in ORCID. The source data, however, is controlled by SBU.
Who should I contact if the affiliation data added to my record is incorrect?
Thank you, and please reach out to orcid-support@stonybrook.edu or visit the SBU ORCID website if you have any questions or concerns.
